This is my attempt to create a reference and guide for myself and other Windows developers who have found themselves having to figure out how to test, debug and develop a web application to be compatible with Safari on the Mac. I have a Mac laptop supplied to me for development and testing with a single button touchpad and I didn't want to spend $50+ out of my own pocket on a mouse that will let me right click. Even so, the lack of the ability to get context menus on everything was driving me crazy. The default View Source window in Safari does not, nor does it have any way to ~GoTo line like Notepad in Windows. Therefore it is difficult to find where the javascript is erroring even if you have [[enabled debugging|Setting up debugging in Safari]] and can get the error message with the line number where it occurred.\n\nTo fix this, install SafariTidy: a tool that shows XHTML validation errors in your status bar. For debugging the XHTML validation is useless BUT if you click on the SafariTidy icon in the status bar on a page it opens up a View Source window that actually has line numbers.

I couldn't figure out why I was having to run the installer every time I ran FireFox. Apparently there are extra steps you have to perform to permanently install an application on the Mac. Running the installer is not enough.\n\nI'll use FireFox as an example but it works the same for any other app, including [[IE|IE 5.23]].\n\n# Download the latest version of FireFox. The admin password was forgotten for the ~PowerBook I'm using, and I needed it to be able to install applications and OS security updates. [[This article|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106156]] has instructions towards the bottom for how to reset the administrator password. \n\nBasically you begin the install process for OSX (you will need the OSX disk). The trick is that when you reboot after you have inserted the disk, hold the ''C'' key down as soon as the Mac shuts down until you see the menu for the installer. To take a screenshot as an image, move your cursor to one of the starting points for the capture and depress ''Command+Shift+4'' (''Command'' is the Apple key).
